Hey, I'm Quinten. I ride offroad. I also write software. I built Roostline because the apps I was using kept doing things I didn't want them doing.
Strava started selling segment data. AllTrails started monetizing trails their users had drawn for free. Komoot raised prices on map packs people had already paid for. None of that sits right with me, so I'm building the app I'd want to use.
This page is the contract. If I ever break a promise on it, you have my email at the bottom and you can come for me.
What I won't do
I won't sell your location, your rides, or your routes. Not to insurers, ad networks, or data brokers.
I won't share your rides with anyone you didn't pick yourself.
I won't train AI on your private rides or routes.
I won't run Facebook pixels, ad trackers, or any of that on the rider-facing app.
I won't change the deal on you. If you sign up at a given price, that's your price for as long as you keep paying. No retroactive paywalls on data you've already saved.
What I do collect
Your name, email, and a hashed password, so you can log in. The routes and rides you choose to save, so they're on every device you sign in from. A short error log when something crashes, so I can fix it. Nothing else.
The honest caveats
A few things technically leave my server. I'd rather you hear it from me:
- Map tiles come from a third-party provider. They see tile requests, not who's looking at them.
- Routing requests go to a routing engine. It sees coordinates, not riders.
- When subscriptions launch, billing goes through a payment provider. They see your card details. I don't.
Your data, always yours
Two buttons in your account screen. Export pulls everything down as GPX and JSON. Delete wipes you out. You don't need to ask me first.
One thing I want to be straight about. If you made a route public, it stays public after you delete your account. Other riders are using it, and yanking it would suck for them. What I do strip is your name. The route shows up as "Anonymous rider", and there's no link back to who you were.
Everything else goes. Private routes, link-shared routes, your rides, your search history, your account.
Pricing
The reason big-tech apps are free is that you are the product. Your location, your habits, your trails get sold downstream to make the numbers work. I'm tired of being the inventory. I'd rather you pay me a few euros a month and stay the customer, the way it used to work.
Roostline is free today because I cover the hosting myself while it's small. When that stops being sustainable, here's the plan. Three tiers, by signup order, all locked for life:
"Locked for life" means your rate doesn't move as long as you stay subscribed. Cancel and come back two years later, you still get your original price. New premium features land in your existing tier; I won't split off a Pro+ behind a new paywall.
